The Code-Ed Sound Rhymes are large-format cards with rhymes that represent every sound of English.

Together, the rhythmical, rhyming text written by Jill Eggleton along with simple, age-appropriate activities developed by Joy Allcock help children learn the foundational literacy skills that build a solid platform for understanding the alphabetic code of English.

The Sound Rhymes are included in Grade K of The Code Is the Key.

Guide Card

The first card in the set is a helpful guide for using the Sound Rhymes.

  • The front of the card features a guide to all 45 rhymes, one for each sound of English.
  • The back of the card explains how to use the activities and provides an overview of Joy Allcock’s speech-to-sounds-to-print approach, which allows students to very quickly learn the alphabetic code of English.

Sound Rhyme Cards

The set includes 45 A3-size Sound Rhyme Cards with an illustrated rhyme on the front that gives students the opportunity to listen for the sounds of English in different positions in words. Built-in activities on the back of each card build a variety of foundational literacy skills, including:

  • Isolating and pronouncing phonemes
  • Rhyming
  • Segmenting syllables
  • Blending phonemes
  • Learning phoneme-grapheme relationships
  • Oral language skills
  • Print knowledge

Digital Rhymes and Printables

Digital and printable versions of the Sound Rhymes are included with the complete set for interactive and flexible use.

  • The digital rhymes allow the rhymes to be projected for the whole class.
  • The printable rhymes gives students the chance to find the spelling patterns for the focus sound on their own, to create their own illustration for the rhyme, and to make up their own verse using the phoneme-grapheme relationships they have learned.

The Sound Rhymes build strong foundational literacy skills with activities that are simple, fast, and fun.
